5 indoor plants that are scientifically proven to make your space healthier

Not only are indoor plants nice to look at, super trendy, and visible proof that you’re a real-life adult who can take care of something – some of them have incredible health benefits for you too! As caring for indoor plants as a hobby becomes increasingly popular, scientists are learning more and more about how keeping them – or at least the right ones – could be incredibly beneficial to our health and wellness.

In fact, several studies have been conducted that scientifically prove the measurable health benefits of certain indoor plant varieties!   1. Spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum)

Not only are these plants extremely easy to grow, but they’re also incredible for the air quality where you’re living! According to a study conducted by NASA (yes, that NASA, spaceship NASA) in which researchers studied the leaves, soil, roots and microorganisms of several houseplants, the common domestic spider plant was shown to act as a natural air-pollutant reducer.

The results of this study showed that “spider plants removed 95% of toxic formaldehyde from the air in a sealed Plexiglas container over a 24-hour period.” Want better air quality in your home? Just trust in spider plants to clean it up for you! The bonus is that they’re super resilient, low maintenance, and easy to take care of.

  1. Elephant Ear Plants (The Colcasia family)

Perennial plants, the Elephants Ear family of houseplants are recognised by their large and (adorably) heart-shaped leaves. Talk about a cutie! These guys are pretty high-maintenance and require bright light and regular watering to keep the soil moist. They also have the potential to get quite big, so you may have to re-pot them a few times and find a large space for them to flourish in. Their benefits are worth the effort though!

Their rubber leaves have the medicinal properties for treating insect stings, so clippings are invaluable in mozzie season, and some species even produce rubbery tubers that you can eat, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous with your cuisine!

  1. Ferns (The Tracheophyta family) 

Volatile organic compounds (or VOCs) are emitted as gasses from certain solids or liquids, include a variety of chemicals, and may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. They’re emitted from a variety of man-made products in your home, which, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, include: “paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, office equipment such as copiers and printers, correction fluids and carbonless copy paper, graphics and craft materials including glues and adhesives, permanent markers, and photographic solutions.”

Thankfully, including ferns in your house plant family actively cleans the air of these VOCs. According to 2022 research published in the Applied Sciences journal, Boston Ferns are the best at this. Keep some of these low-maintenance ferns around if you’re an avid crafter or photographer.

  1. Pothos plants (Epipremnum aureum)

Also known as devil’s ivy or golden pothos, these easy-to-care-for houseplants require infrequent watering and indirect sunlight. They’re also very nice to look at, with wide, marbled leaves in vibrant emeralds and yellow. What makes them extra special is that they’re ideal houseplants for asthmatics or those struggling with respiratory issues. They also clean the air of VOCs, like ferns, so they’re a double win!

  1. Aloe Vera (Scientifically, still just ‘aloe vera.’ Neat!)

If you try your best but you’re still a bit of a serial plant murderer (some of us just aren’t born with that green thumb, unfortunately) then succulents should be your go-to indoor plants. They’re drought-resistant, meaning they only need watering when their soil is completely dry.

Scientific studies have shown that they can increase a room’s humidity, which can be particularly beneficial in dry South African winters. Aloe Vera specifically has medicinal properties for the skin and has been proven to aid in the treatment of skin ailments like burns, cuts and irritation, according to researchers at Mount Sinai. You can still be a plant parent with flawless skin even if you’re not the greatest at the whole “keeping plants alive” thing.
