Pruning Hybrid teas, miniatures and floribundas
By pruning roses that grow in a bush-like fashion in winter, your intention is to build a cup-shaped structure that is fairly open in the centre which will allow air and light to penetrate the plant.

For bush shaped roses ensure that you make pruning cuts just above an outward-facing growth bud to encourage development of the cup-shaped structure from outward-growing stems.

The 3 Basic Pruning Steps
(1) Cut back dead stems
(2) Cut out thin or weak stems
(3) Cut out stems that cross or rub

Once you have followed the 3 Basic Prunin Steps, each rose type will require its own specific pruning techniques:
Hybrid Tea - exceptionally vigorous hybrid tea varieties must occasionally be cut back very hard when they become too tall and leggy.
Floribundas - usually pruned a little less severly as the generally produce more flowers thatn hybrid teas.
Standard Roses - pruned in exactly the same way as the bush types.
Large Minitures - pruned the same way as floribundes with smaller miniatures only needing dead and degenerating twigs snipped out and the rest of the bush kept tidy.

Remember that the main objectives of pruning are  the removal of degenerating and useless growth to encourage new growth which in turn will keep the plant vigorous and help produce better flowers.
