Herbs for a potager

In this article we focus on the role that herbs play in the potager. Of course, given their culinary uses, herbs are absolutely essential in a potager, but they also fulfil other roles in this form of garden.
The hardy-growing perennials, like Thyme, Rosemary, Oregano and Fennel, provide a permanent framework for the garden, providing a sense of continuity during the times when seasonal vegetables are harvested and annual flowers replaced. Small-growing herbs like Parsley, Thyme, Chervil, Salad Burnet and Winter Savory make excellent edgings or borders for beds, masking bare spots as the season progresses. The varieties planted should be chosen in keeping with the scale of the garden.

Phlox - another way for your garden to sparkle

Phlox, especially the hybrids developed specifically for our South African conditions, can be used to bring vibrant colour to our gardens, with some varieties flowering right through from June to January.
In the world of flowers, the essence of simplicity is the single, five-petalled bloom with its innocent, open face. This simple charm is found in summer-flowering impatiens and vincas as well as winter's pansies and Iceland poppies. Phlox, in all shades of red, pink, blue-mauve, white and salmon, should also come to mind and the good news is that the somewhat straggly original varieties have been replaced by hybrids that are more compact and bushy and flower profusely.
